BOOK | Manual for Overcoming the Crisis: 17 Voices and Proposals in a Polarized Chile

The head of studies at AthenaLab, John Griffiths, contributed the chapter "Security and Its Persistent Denial" in the book "Manual for Overcoming the Crisis," which brings together seventeen prominent experts from various disciplines who offer complementary perspectives and proposals on the challenges facing Chile.

Chile is at a crossroads. Governance, institutions, and security are experiencing wear and tear, and rather than mere diagnoses, they require determination. Citizens observe with skepticism how public decisions are debated more in terms of calculation than the common good.

Through seventeen frank and lucid conversations, Manual for Overcoming the Crisis does not provide magical formulas or one-size-fits-all solutions, but it does emphasize the urgent need to reason, to reach consensus, and to act with purpose. In light of the risk of deepening a crisis that could even undermine our democracy, this book is an invitation to confront the most pressing problems of our time, a call to reflection and action in what may be one of our last opportunities.

Manual for Overcoming the Crisis brings together seventeen prominent experts from various disciplines who offer complementary perspectives and proposals on the challenges facing Chile. Among them are national award winners José Maza, Agustín Squella, and César Ross, as well as notable professionals such as journalists Consuelo Saavedra, Paz Milet, and Rodrigo Browne, and political scientists and philosophers Diana Aurenque, Juan Pablo Luna, Aldo Cassinelli, and Cristóbal Bellolio. It also includes security experts like Lucía Dammert, Pablo Zeballos, John Griffiths, and Pía Greene, along with recognized lawyers such as Patricia Muñoz, Carlos Gajardo, and Francisco Cox.

This book, which aims to contribute to public debate, presents itself as an imaginary roundtable where academics, intellectuals, and representatives from various sectors of Chilean society reflect on the most urgent challenges of our time: questions about democracy, security issues, justice, corruption, institutions, among others.

The launch took place on December 19 at the Pontifical Catholic University of Chile.
