Regional Integration Processes in Defense: Is the South American Defense Council -UNASUR- a New Attempt?

Globalization, Competitiveness and Governance Journal, Georgetown University, 2009

John Griffiths Spielman

This article discusses the historical efforts of regional integration to suggest the establishment of the Union of South American Nations (UNASUR) from the perspective of the South American Defense Council (CSD). The hypothesis is that any attempt at regional integration in the realm of security and defense cannot be achieved without a consolidated state at the level of each country, acceptable infrastructure integration in the region, and an adequate prior level of political integration. The process will be enhanced if the participating units in this integration process are more homogeneous and are more interconnected through various political, infrastructure, and energy projects.
