The crowning achievement

El Mercurio, Tuesday, April 2, 2019

The crowning achievement and final act of the bicentennial of the Chilean Navy took place last week at the naval base in Portsmouth, United Kingdom. In an unprecedented event in the rich naval history that connects both navies, the First Sea Lord of the Admiralty, Admiral Sir Philip Jones, renamed the headquarters of the British fleet in honor of Cochrane.

As the commemorative plaque indicates, this is a recognition of the 200 years of our navy, and obviously in honor of such an illustrious sailor, who commanded and was one of the founding fathers of our Navy between 1818 and 1822.

What a remarkable way to conclude the bicentennial of the Navy and, at the same time, to highlight Cochrane, one of the most brilliant sailors of the 19th century.
