PUBLIC ACCOUNT 2022: Security Becomes a Priority, but Details Are Lacking

In his first public account before Congress and subsequent national broadcast, President Gabriel Boric acknowledged that crime is one of the major “concerns” of Chileans and announced a series of measures in this regard, which include increasing police personnel, strengthening restrictions on access to firearms, and optimizing tools to combat organized crime, all within the framework of “civil control of security.”

“The increase in violence and crime is an issue that affects us all, and I know that today it is one of your main concerns,” Boric said in his national address. “We understand its deep-rooted causes, and we are confronting its most direct effects.
