ASMAR launches the multipurpose vessel "Magallanes," a new milestone in the National Naval Construction Plan

At the facilities of the Shipyards and Naval Workshops of the Navy, ASMAR Talcahuano, the vessel was launched into the sea LPD-93 “Magallanes”, the first unit of the project Escotillón IV of the Chilean Navy.

The “Magallanes” represents a new demonstration of the industrial, technical, and human capabilities developed by ASMAR and the network of companies, suppliers, professionals, and workers involved in shipbuilding in Chile. Its launch confirms the country’s ability to design, build, and integrate complex naval units, strengthening strategic autonomy and the national defense industrial base.

This project is part of the Continuous National Naval Construction Plan, an initiative aimed at ensuring continuity, planning, and long-term projection for shipbuilding in Chile. This plan seeks to secure a sustained workload for the shipbuilding industry, preserve critical capabilities, generate specialized employment, strengthen national suppliers, and consolidate technological knowledge in strategic areas for the country.

Once incorporated into service, the multipurpose vessel “Magallanes” will enhance the capabilities of the Chilean Navy in strategic transport, logistical support, amphibious operations, territorial connectivity, support for isolated areas, and response to emergencies and natural disasters. Its operational flexibility makes it a relevant platform for both defense tasks and missions supporting the community and the presence of the State in the national maritime territory.

The launch of the “Magallanes” adds to other recent milestones in Chilean shipbuilding and reinforces the role of ASMAR Talcahuano as one of the main industrial hubs in the South Pacific. It also highlights the importance of maintaining a long-term public policy that allows for the projection of new units, sustains skilled employment, and continues to develop sovereign capabilities in the maritime and naval fields.

With this launch, Chile advances in consolidating a modern, competitive, and strategic shipbuilding industry, capable of simultaneously contributing to national defense, industrial development, technological innovation, and strengthening the country’s maritime presence.
